Business Advocacy Starts Here: The Chamber is All of Us

by Page Michel, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President

When people ask what the Chamber of Commerce really does, one of the most important answers is this: we advocate for business-friendly policies that strengthen our community. That’s not just about economics…it’s about quality of life, opportunity, and supporting the very people who make San Marcos work.

Businesses are the backbone of any community. They provide the services we all rely on every day: childcare, healthcare, food, home repairs, education, entertainment, and so much more. Whenever you’re dining out, visiting a local shop, hiring a contractor, or getting your car serviced, you’re supporting small businesses that, in turn, support our local economy.

Here in San Marcos, many of those business owners are you. Or your friends. Or your family members. That’s why the San Marcos Area Chamber is committed to making sure your voice is heard. Our job is to bring business voices together to identify challenges, propose solutions, and work with local, state, and federal leaders to create policies that help, not hinder, business success.

Each year, a dedicated group of volunteer business representatives serve on the Chamber’s Board of Directors. These leaders come from different industries and backgrounds, but they share one goal: helping San Marcos thrive. They’re the ones who keep their ear to the ground, track emerging issues, and guide the Chamber’s advocacy efforts to pursue positive outcomes for all of us.

Still, there’s a common misconception that the Chamber is an elite or exclusive organization. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Of its 600+ member businesses, more than 80% are small, mom-and-pop types with fewer than 20 employees. Members are your neighborhood restaurants, family-run service providers, franchise owners, new entrepreneurs and local “legends” who’ve been serving this town for decades.

If the Chamber disappeared tomorrow, it probably wouldn’t be two weeks before a group of business owners gathered around a table to talk about a shared issue and work together on it. That’s what a Chamber of Commerce is at its core: a “room” (chamber) of “businesses” (commerce) coming together.

It’s not some outside organization—it’s all of us, right here in San Marcos. For more than 120 years, the San Marcos Area Chamber has proudly served this purpose.

The SM Chamber offers a helpful tool online to make sure you’re voice can always be haerd. Visit www.SanMarcosTexas.com and look under the “Business Resources” tab to find the Advocacy Alert feature. You can use it to tell us about anything happening at your business for which you need guidance, connections, or support. It’s just one more way we work to ensure your voice is heard and your business is backed.

So the next time you hear “Chamber of Commerce,” remember—we’re not just FOR businesses. We ARE businesses. We are you.

The Chamber as a Community Convener

by Page Michel, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President

In this monthly column, my goal is to help you discover what exactly a Chamber of Commerce does! Today I want to talk about one of our most important roles: bringing people together. The San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce serves as a convener year-round, creating opportunities for connection and collaboration among businesses, nonprofits, civic leaders, major employers, and government agencies. These relationships are vital to a strong, thriving community that works together toward shared goals.

Every month, the Chamber hosts a variety of events designed to make these connections easy and accessible—many at no cost, thanks to generous business sponsors. From early-morning Coffee & Commerce gatherings to after-hours Mixers, the Corridor Women’s Network and Young Professionals, each event brings together a diverse group of people from the community. These aren’t just social gatherings—they’re relationship-building opportunities where collaboration starts, ideas are shared, and meaningful partnerships begin.

One of the largest annual events — the Business Showcase: Tailgate Edition! – is coming soon on August 28 at the San Marcos Conference Center. The Daily Record is our #1 Media Partner for this dynamic expo, which is free and open to the whole community. Attendees can interact with over 100 local businesses and civic organizations—all in one place—to discover what’s new in the community. The result? Valuable connections that help us support each other’s work and strengthen the impact.

But convening goes beyond networking events. The Chamber also coordinates initiatives like the Education Partners Committee, a group of educators from San Marcos CISD, Texas State University, San Marcos Academy, Community Action and other resource providers and business leaders who are ready to invest in our local students’ futures. This committee sparks impactful collaborations, including our current focus on the Summer Teacher Externships program to better connect classroom learning with real-world careers.

More details about Summer Teacher Externships will be covered in this column next month. Reach out by email to find out more now about the Chamber’s education programs!

Why is this work important? Because often we find that educators doing great work in one area may not know about complementary efforts happening across town! When programs operate in silos, opportunities are missed. The Chamber’s goal is to amplify their impact by bringing people and resources together, aligning efforts, and encouraging support that leads to stronger outcomes. The results include new collaborations, and even funding sources, to move important goals forward.

Now when you see the San Marcos Chamber logo on an event or flyer, you’ll know that it represents more than business advocacy. It displays a commitment to unity, progress, and continuous improvement across our entire community. We invite you to get involved, stay connected, and be part of something bigger—because great things happen when we work together.

Reach out to us the Chamber of Commerce at any time by email to chamber@sanmarcostexas.com or call during business hours 512-393-5900.
