Infrastructure Matters: Planning for the Roads We All Rely On

by Page Michel, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President

If you’ve driven anywhere around central Texas lately, you’ve felt it. More cars. More congestion. More waiting at lights. Growth is not coming to our region. It’s already here.

This week, the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce and Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership hosted the 2026 “Infrastructure Summit” event, bringing together top officials from TxDOT and elected officials from Hays and surrounding counties. The goal was simple but critical: to help our community better understand what it takes to plan, fund, and build the transportation improvements our growing region needs.

One of the biggest takeaways from the Summit was that roadway projects do not happen overnight. What may look like “just another construction project” represents years of coordination, engineering studies, environmental review, funding strategies, and collaboration among city, county, region, and state partners.

Transportation improvements require patience. They require persistence. And they require partnership.

TxDOT leaders walked attendees through how projects are prioritized and how communities can effectively advocate for the improvements they need. Elected officials from several counties shared real-world examples of how recent projects were carefully planned and implemented, through strategic cooperation across jurisdictions and funding sources.

Perhaps most importantly, the Summit reinforced a reality we all must accept: there is no scenario where traffic simply stays the same. As our region continues to grow, infrastructure must grow with it. The question is not whether we will expand and improve our roadways, but how strategically and proactively we will do it.

Infrastructure is not a partisan issue. It is a quality-of-life issue. Safe and efficient roadways support small businesses, improve emergency response times, reduce our stress, and ensure that businesses remain accessible. When we invest in transportation, we are investing in the long-term success of our community and all our citizens.

It is helpful for residents to understand the complexity behind road projects and support leaders who are working to move them forward. Progress requires informed voters, engaged stakeholders, and a shared commitment to practical solutions.

The Chamber remains committed to fostering conversations that help our community move from frustration to understanding, and from understanding to action. Because in a region that is growing as quickly as ours, standing still is not an option.

A Delicious Way to Support Local

by Page Michel, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President

When local restaurants experience a slow month, the ripple effect reaches way beyond empty tables. Fewer diners mean fewer shifts, which means fewer paychecks for local workers, which causes fewer purchases at other local businesses and fewer dollars circulating in our economy.

That’s one of the key reasons why the Chamber launched Savor San Marcos, a new “restaurant week” style promotion that was held January 23 through February 1st. It was designed to spotlight awesome local eateries, boost business during a slow time, and remind everyone that dining local can “feed” the whole community.

This citywide promotion highlighted twenty San Marcos restaurants and rewarded participation with fun, flavorful incentives. Hot Deals ran online and diners were encouraged to eat out then post about their experiences using #SavorSanMarcos.

Then we watched the community light up in response! There were hundreds of dollars in gift cards awarded to twenty daily winners. The online engagement was phenomenal, with people sharing excellent photos and videos, tagging friends, and telling stories about their favorite local bites. All that focused energy created momentum at local registers and helped fill seats during a month when business is lagging.

Beyond the stats, the personal discoveries really made this campaign special. People tried new spots, residents rediscovered forgotten favorites, and visitors got a tasty tour of San Marcos. Restaurant owners reported that the buzz brought in fresh faces and reconnected them with longtime customers. For many, it was the pick-me-up they needed to keep going strong this winter.

Based on the success of the campaign, the Chamber is considering running Savor San Marcos again in early August, another time when restaurants experience a dip as the university population dips and heat rises during summer break.

We’d love your feedback. Did you hear about the campaign while it was running? Have any dining experiences to share? Have any ideas to suggest to improve the next promotion? Send your input to chamber@sanmarcostexas.com. We’re listening and hope to gain some insights to improve the next iteration of the program.

At its heart, Savor San Marcos is a great example of the Chamber’s mission in action: to support local businesses, promote community connection, and strengthen the local economy in creative, meaningful ways.

Remember, when you support local flavor, you’re investing in local jobs, local families, and our vibrant community. #SavorSanMarcos

Infrastructure Summit to Spotlight Transportation Future of Central Texas Regional Leaders Announced as Featured Speakers

The San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce and Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership (HCEDP) will host the 2026 Infrastructure Summit, presented by HNTB, on Wednesday, March 4, at the San Marcos Conference Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This year’s Summit will focus on transportation infrastructure, convening business, government, and community leaders for an in-depth conversation on the projects and policies shaping the region’s mobility and economic future.

As growth along the I-35 corridor continues at a rapid pace, strategic transportation investment has never been more critical for businesses, workers, and residents. The Infrastructure Summit will deliver timely updates on major regional projects, funding priorities, and state and local partnership efforts that directly impact workforce mobility, development timelines, supply chains, and overall economic competitiveness.

The program will feature insights from senior transportation officials responsible for overseeing and implementing some of the most significant infrastructure projects in the state. The keynote speaker will be Texas Transportation Commissioner Steven Alvis, who brings decades of experience in large-scale infrastructure development and private-sector real estate investment. As commissioner, Alvis plays a key role in setting statewide priorities, approving major investments, and guiding long-range planning efforts that directly affect fast-growing regions like Central Texas.

Joining him for a panel discussion are Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Austin District Engineer Tucker Ferguson and TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Charles Benavidez, two leaders responsible for planning, delivering, and managing transportation projects across the Austin-San Antonio corridor. Together, their districts oversee some of the most complex and heavily traveled segments of I-35, along with critical safety and mobility improvements that support economic development in our region. Additional county and regional leaders will join the panel, to be announced in a forthcoming release.

Designed for both business and public-sector leaders, the Infrastructure Summit offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from decision-makers and gain valuable insight into how today’s transportation strategies will shape the region’s long-term growth and prosperity.

The discussion will be moderated by Will Conley, Principal with American StructurePoint, past Chair of CAMPO, and Hays County Commissioner. Panelists will address current and future transportation investments and the partnerships between state and local jurisdictions that are guiding infrastructure development along the I-35 corridor and surrounding communities.

“Our region is at a pivotal point for transportation development,” said Conley, “This summit brings agencies, communities, and the business sector together around shared priorities that support smart, fiscally sound investment strategies along I-35.”

“This summit is about helping businesses prepare for what’s ahead,” said Mike Kamerlander, President and CEO of the Hays Caldwell Economic Development Partnership. “Transportation decisions made today will influence where people live, how employees commute, and how goods move for decades. Connecting these conversations directly to the business community is essential for long-term economic vitality.”

Sponsorship opportunities are currently available and provide businesses with elevated visibility and meaningful

engagement with regional leaders and influencers.

Seating is limited for this high-impact event. To secure sponsorship opportunities, individual tickets, or reserved tables, visit bit.ly/InfrastructureSummit or contact the San Marcos Area Chamber at chamber@sanmarcostexas.com.

Connection is Currency: Invest in 2026

by Page Michel, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President

When economic times are slow, businesses often tighten their belts and hope for smoother days ahead. But the strongest business owners don’t simply hope to survive; they seek connections and expand their support system. And that’s where Chamber membership plays a key role.

As we start off 2026 with questions about the direction of the economy, this remains clear: community and collaboration are vital business assets. And it’s your local Chamber that offers both in abundance.

This year as in years past, the Chamber will host friendly networking events, learning opportunities, and collaborative gatherings for businesses of all sizes and sectors. From Coffee & Commerce and the Corridor Women’s and Young Professionals Networks, to Business Education lunch & learns and the high-impact Business Showcase held in August, Chamber programs are designed to build real relationships. They offer the face-to-face conversations that are rare in these digital times. The ones that spark new opportunities and turn connections into customers and partnerships.

We all know budgets are tight. That’s why so many Chamber events are free to attend, built-in to the cost of annual membership and thanks to the generous sponsorship of several large local businesses who believe in supporting the ecosystem we all rely on. There’s no better time than now to attend, exchange ideas, and amplify each other’s work. You’re not in this alone.

It’s also more important now than ever for your business to be found. Nearly all consumers search online before making a purchase, and most of those searches happen on Google. Did you know that Google ranks a link to/from a Chamber of Commerce website among the most credible in any community. The link to your business from the San Marcos Chamber’s online Business Directory gives your SEO a valuable boost, making it easier for potential customers to find you. It marks you as a credible, community-engaged business. That alone makes Chamber membership one of the smartest marketing investments you can make.

But marketing is only part of the story. The Chamber helps elevate your voice in advocacy, education, workforce development, tourism, and quality-of-life initiatives.

The San Marcos Area Chamber champions policies and programs that make it easier to grow businesses here. When you’re a Chamber member, you’re part of a unified voice shaping the future of our region. You benefit from the results and you help other businesses at the same time.

2026 may not start off booming, but it’s brimming with possibility. The Chamber is here to help you navigate this time together. Let’s keep connecting, collaborating, and moving forward.

For more information on how to get involved or make the most of your Chamber membership, reach out to chamber@sanmarcostexas.com or check out the calendar of upcoming events and latest news posted on www.SanMarcosTexas.com. Let’s ring in the new year together!

Let’s Speak Up for the Businesses That Lift Us All

by Page Michel, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President

In every community across America, and right here in San Marcos, businesses are more than buildings and paychecks. They are lifelines. They sponsor youth teams, donate meals, provide auction items for fundraisers, host job-shadowing students, and give generously to local nonprofits that provide services for our neighbors most in need. They work hard, give back, and show up. Even when economic times are tough.

Yet too often, the online discourse in San Marcos paints a different picture.

Some people have a distorted or incomplete view of what businesses actually do. Online, it’s become common to see “business” used as a negative word, and local businesses called “greedy” or “bad for the community.”  The fact is, businesses are the very ENGINE of the community.

If it wasn’t for jobs at local businesses, or customers buying goods and services, the majority of people would not have livelihoods and could not continue to make a living.

What’s missing from the online statements is the human element. Businesses are owned and managed by people. They are not faceless. They are your neighbors, and they are raising families here too. They’re the people who greet you at the counter, show up with resources after disasters, and quietly sponsor every school field trip and youth tournament.

The challenge is, most business owners don’t have time to attend town halls or city council meetings or comment online. They’re working long hours to meet payroll, keep operations going, and care for their customers.

So when policy decisions are driven by the loudest voices in the room, instead of the most representative ones, the absence of business input can carry real consequences.

This is why we need more positive voices speaking up for local businesses.

Now more than ever, we need people in the community to stand up for business-friendly policies that encourage innovation and opportunity. Why? Because when local businesses thrive, so do local people. Through jobs, sales, internships, donations, and a stronger economy that benefits all residents.

The San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce works to advocate for policies that support small businesses and protect the entrepreneurial spirit that makes this city vibrant. We do this with input from a diverse and dedicated group of volunteer leaders who serve on our Board of Directors and Ambassadors Club, most of whom are small business owners and managers themselves.

Over 80% of the 600+ members of the Chamber are mom-and-pop businesses with fewer than 20 employees. These are not corporations with out-of-town interests. They represent the cornerstones of our community. And they need champions.

So here’s the ask: Be a positive voice. Speak up when you see business being criticized.

We encourage all local businesses to share ÿour perspectives, speak up about the challenges you face, and use the tools available to connect with civic leaders. The Chamber’s Advocacy Alert at www.SanMarcosTexas.com is one of those tools. Located under the “Business Resources” tab, it’s a 24/7 way to share what’s going on at your business and request support or connections.

Let’s make sure that the positive voices in San Marcos rise above the noise, and that our business community continues to be seen, heard, and valued.

  • Allison Hardy, Divided Sky Roofing & Solar
  • Josie Falletta, Downtown San Marcos
  • Richard Lopez, RiverCity Screenprinting & Embroidery
  • José Lozano, Cude Engineers
  • Kristan Machado, KnD’s Boutique
  • Justin Pearson, San Marcos BBQ

The “SSU40” awards recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of young leaders. These award winners have not only achieved significant success in their fields but have demonstrated a deep commitment to improving the San Marcos community.

This year’s award winners were asked to share about their mentors and advice to other young professionals. Read more about each award recipient below!

Allison Hardy, Divided Sky Roofing & Solar

Tell us about a mentor who inspired/inspires you in your career.
A mentor who’s truly inspired me is my husband, John — my best friend and favorite leader. His passion for community and connection is honestly unmatched. He just has this natural way of bringing people together, whether it’s through work, volunteering, or even casual get-togethers with friends. From him, I’ve learned that real collaboration isn’t about dividing up tasks — it’s about making people feel seen, heard, and valued.  John always reminds me to keep relationships strong and never burn bridges. Even when opinions differ, he’s the first to say that people and connections matter more than being “right.” He’s also deeply committed to giving back, especially to nonprofits and our local community. That shared mindset has helped us build so many meaningful friendships and a strong support network we’re incredibly grateful for.

What is a favorite leadership quote of yours?
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

What advice would you give another young professional starting out in your field?
The people you hang out with shape your mindset, habits, and success — when you spend time with driven, high-standard people, you naturally start leveling up too. Good friends make a huge difference in your professional journey — they’re the ones who have your back when things get tough, cheer you on when you win, and call you out when you lose focus. They push you to grow past your comfort zone and remind you that real progress happens when you’re willing to stretch yourself. Surround yourself with people who keep you disciplined, help you think bigger, and remind you to stay true to your values. Your environment plays a massive role in who you become. The people around you can either sharpen you or dull your potential, so be intentional about who you let in your circle. Stick with people who make you want to be better — not just for success, but for growth, character, and purpose.

Josie Falletta, Downtown San Marcos

Tell us about a mentor who inspired/inspires you in your career.
I am continually inspired by Beverly Abell, Downtown Development Manager for the city of Mesquite, TX. Beverly has worked in the field of downtown revitalization for over 30 years, and she is a font of information on any topic related to downtowns. She is a leader in both the state and national Main Street communities, and she never hesitates to share resources or lessons learned.

What is a favorite leadership quote of yours?
“Dreams are the touchstones of our characters.” – Henry David Thoreau

I have had this quote taped to my computer monitor for years. It is a daily reminder to continue to dream big, for myself, for my team, for Downtown, and for our community.

What advice would you give another young professional starting out in your field?
I would encourage anyone starting in the field of downtown revitalization to get out in the community and meet people! This work is not done solo. In fact, it depends heavily on the support of the community, including business owners, property owners, community members, nonprofits, service organizations, volunteers, elected officials, city leaders, other departments, real estate professionals, developers, entrepreneurs, students…the list goes on. Success in this field only happens when community members are empowered to become Downtown champions. That doesn’t happen by sitting in an office, it happens by building meaningful relationships out in the community and inviting others to participate in the revitalization process.

Richard Lopez, RiverCity Screenprinting & Embroidery

Tell us about a mentor who inspired/inspires you in your career.
Luke Sanders, CEO of RiverCity inspires me. When I got to RiverCity, I was an entry level employee. Over the last 13 years, he has helped train and mold me into a part of the management team. He cares a great deal about his community, and his employees. The fact that so many of them including myself stay around the company so long, is because he is not only a good boss but a leader.

On a personal note, the biggest inspirations and leaders are the ones that are not afraid to share their faith whether at a local or national level. As a Christian, local leadership like Trevor Atchley (Radical Church) or national Leaders (Charlie Kirk, Mark Driscoll, John Piper) inspire me ultimately through the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be a better person and more Christlike!

What is a favorite leadership quote of yours?
“In baseball and in business, there are three types of people. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened.” – Tommy Lasorda

What advice would you give another young professional starting out in your field?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from those around you, and Network, Network, Network!

José Lozano, Cude Engineers

Tell us about a mentor who inspired/inspires you in your career.
My dad has always been my mentor, guiding me with a steady example rather than big speeches. He showed me that real progress comes from consistent effort and a willingness to push through difficulty. Watching him work taught me that goals are earned, not given, and that dedication is the clearest path to anything worth having.

What is a favorite leadership quote of yours?
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky – Michael Scott

I always think about how it only takes one phone call, one email, or one message to land a project. I’ve sent thousands of emails and made hundreds of calls, and it’s that mindset of taking every shot that has helped us win some of the projects we’re working on today.

What advice would you give another young professional starting out in your field?
If you’re just starting in my field, here’s what I want you to know. Master the basics and take pride in the small tasks because they build the foundation for everything else. Be reliable, follow through, and show up prepared since people notice steadiness more than speed. Ask questions whenever you need to; it shows commitment, not inexperience. Confidence won’t show up first, so take action even when you feel unsure. Most importantly, stay proactive and overcommunicate, because keeping people informed and taking initiative will open doors you didn’t even know were there.

Kristan Machado, KnD’s Boutique

Tell us about a mentor who inspired/inspires you in your career.
A role model who inspires me every single day is my mother. She has taught me everything I know about business, resilience, and giving back. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without her constant love and support.

She is the reason KnD’s continues to thrive. While I’m out in the community building relationships and creating new opportunities, she is the backbone of our business, holding everything down with a level of dedication that amazes me.

She isn’t just behind the scenes either. So many of the clothing pieces and accessories in our boutique are handmade by her. She pours her creativity and passion into every item, making our shop feel personal and unique in a way you just don’t find everywhere.

My mom leads by example. She works hard, cares deeply, and always finds a way to make things happen. Watching her has shown me what strong leadership looks like and what it means to build something that matters.

She inspires me to keep growing, keep believing, and keep honoring the community we love. She is my role model, my partner, my biggest cheerleader…and the heart of KnD’s

What is a favorite leadership quote of yours?
“Well-behaved women rarely make history!” A motto and basically my entire business strategy.

“Well-behaved women rarely make history” is more than a cute line on a wall. It’s a story of a woman who bought a building in downtown San Marcos when others told her to play it safe. It’s a boutique that survived floods, street closures, and a pandemic by refusing to quietly disappear. It’s saying yes to big community roles, yes to partnerships with Texas State and San Marcos High school, yes to dreaming bigger then what anyone expected from a small shop on the square.

I wasn’t meant to sit still or follow the rules written by anyone else. I’m here to create spaces where other women feel powerful, stylish, seen and supported. It’s about leaving a mark that’s going to be remembered far past the last receipt of the day!!!

What advice would you give another young professional starting out in your field?
Surround yourself with people who believe in your wild ideas. Ask questions, learn from others, but make sure the final decisions reflect who you are and what you want your brand to stand for.

Nothing will happen overnight. There will be long days, scary risks, and moments where quitting seems easier. Push through. Those tough moments are shaping the strength you’ll need for the big wins.

Be obsessed with your customers. Know what they like, their style, and what makes them feel beautiful. When people feel seen, they become loyal for life.

Most importantly, don’t shrink. People will underestimate you. Let that fuel you. Show up boldly, speak proudly about your goals, and trust that you are worthy of everything you’re working for, and HAVE FUN!!!!

This field is competitive. That’s what makes it exciting. There is room for you at the table if you build your own chair.

Justin Pearson, San Marcos BBQ

Tell us about a mentor who inspired/inspires you in your career.
A mentor that inspired me is my Grandfather Floyd Wilhelm, who started Chisholm trail bbq in Lockhart. He was always very hard working and was the best in his business. His ability to be successful and take care of the community was seamless and always inspired me.

What is a favorite leadership quote of yours?
“Persistence pays off, where there’s a will there is a way!”

What advice would you give another young professional starting out in your field?
I would love to tell any young business person to learn to be patient, and learn balance between business and personal life. Then, use persistence and create consistency in all your work so that your time can truly be utilized to its best potential. This is the true skill needed. Restaurant world is tough but there are great people that can do it!

Investing in Students, Building a Stronger San Marcos

by Page Michel, San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce President

At the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce, we believe that supporting education is one of the most powerful ways to support economic growth and community well-being. That’s why our Chamber’s number one goal is to be a champion for our local public schools and connect the business community with opportunities to help students succeed.

Throughout the year, the Chamber serves as a bridge between schools and the business community. We lead an Education Partners Committee, which brings together leaders from San Marcos CISD, Texas State University, San Marcos Academy, nonprofits, and local employers to collaborate on projects that benefit students, educators, and families. These connections often spark new ideas and high-impact partnerships.

One of our new initiatives is recruiting volunteers for early literacy programs, where local professionals spend time reading with young students to build confidence, vocabulary, and a love of learning. It is the Reading Buddies program, facilitated by Communities In Schools with Program Managers at each campus. The one-on-one time for a student with a caring adult can change a child’s trajectory, and many volunteers say it’s the most rewarding part of their month.

We also recognize the importance of investing in long-term success. Through partnerships with donors and businesses, the Chamber helps coordinate scholarships for graduating seniors, giving them a financial boost as they head to college, trade school, or the workforce.

For families considering San Marcos as their new home, the Chamber produces an online informational hub, RallyfortheRattlers.com, that features school highlights, academic achievements, student activities, and district news. This resource helps newcomers understand the strength of our schools and the pride our community takes in them.

Our Youth Leadership San Marcos program gives high school juniors and seniors a unique experience that broadens their understanding of local government, history, career paths, and community involvement. Each year, a cohort of 15 meets with civic leaders, business owners, healthcare professionals and educators to learn about leadership and how to get involved in the community.

Why do we do all this? Because today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce. If we want to attract and retain employers in San Marcos, we must demonstrate that we are investing in future talent. And that investment happens when the business community gets involved.

Whether it’s reading to a single student, donating to scholarships, or speaking to a group of students about your profession, there are countless ways to help boost the success of San Marcos CISD. Each effort makes an impact and a lasting difference, not only in a student’s life but in the future of our city.

Together, we’re helping shape a brighter future for San Marcos, one student at a time.
