Teachers who apply for the program have the opportunity to indicate the type of business they would prefer to work with during their externship. Based on their preferences, they are matched with a participating local business. Once paired, teachers will work 5 four-hour days at the jobsite. The schedule will be determined by the teacher and the business partner, with flexibility to complete the externship between June 1 and mid-July.
During the externship, teachers will conduct a series of interviews with various employees at the jobsite to gain a deeper understanding of the industry, workplace culture, and key skills relevant to the field. Throughout the experience, teachers will maintain a journal documenting their observations, key takeaways, and reflections on how the externship connects to their curriculum.
After completing their time at the business, teachers will create a lesson plan that integrates their new knowledge into their classroom instruction for the upcoming school year. All externs will attend a final gathering to discuss their experiences, provide feedback on the program, and share insights with fellow educators. Teachers can receive a $1,000 stipend for successfully completing this program.
Because when you open your doors to a teacher, you’re not just offering a desk and a tour — you’re offering perspective, inspiration, and real-world relevance. Something they won’t get otherwise. You’ll help educators understand the skills your industry needs, so they can better prepare students—your future hires. It’s a smart investment in workforce development, brand visibility, and community impact, all rolled into one meaningful experience. This is more than a learning opportunity—it’s a lasting investment in your business and industry’s future in San Marcos.
